Our licensed speech-language pathologists work with children ages 0–5 through therapy sessions designed to improve speech, language, and early literacy skills.
Helping young children communicate clearly and confidently
Through Felton’s Early Expressions: Speech & Language program, each child receives a plan tailored to their individual needs. Therapy sessions use play-based, hands-on activities to make learning fun and engaging. Families also receive practical guidance on supporting communication development at home and in daily routines, helping children build strong, effective communication skills.
Early Expressions serves children from birth to age five who experience mild, moderate, or severe delays in speech, language, or communication. The program supports children with challenges in expressing themselves, understanding language, or developing early communication skills. Each child receives individualized intervention tailored to their needs.
In Felton’s inclusive early childhood education programs, children ages 0–5 receive speech therapy within their natural learning environments—classrooms, playgrounds, and daily routines. Our speech-language pathologists work collaboratively with teachers and families to support each child’s unique communication needs.
Through play-based, hands-on activities, children learn to express themselves, understand others, and build the skills needed to connect with peers, teachers, and family members. Using evidence-based models such as Hanen, AEPS®-3, Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), the Rossetti test, and PLS-5, therapists assess, set goals, and provide interventions tailored to each child’s strengths and areas for growth. These engaging sessions help children express themselves, understand others, and participate fully in their learning communities.
Families interested in Early Expressions services can reach out to either the Golden Gate Regional Center’s (GGRC) Early Start program or the San Francisco Unified School District’s (SFUSD) Special Education Preschool division to begin the referral process. Both programs help determine eligibility and connect families with the resources needed to support their child’s speech and language development.
Families can also connect directly with Felton Institute for support with the referral process at eiadm@felton.org.
Services are available at all of Felton’s Early Care & Education (ECE) program sites, as well as in the child’s home or community setting when approved on the child’s Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). All services are delivered in the child’s natural environment, meaning they take place in settings the child normally attends rather than in a clinic.
