Alton Jelks

Alton Jelks has served as a Felton board member since January 2025.

Mr. Jelks has a long career in politics and as a university lecturer. He has extensive experience and expertise in public policy development and strategic planning. Among his various positions, he worked as a staff member in the California State Assembly and worked as Special Assistant to Oakland City Mayor Elihu Harris for 8 years. He also acted as Deputy City Auditor for the City of Oakland and Vice Chancellor for the Peralta Community College District.

Since 1990, he has taught public administration, bringing his diverse experience to his position as a Faculty Lecturer at California State University, East Bay. He is the founder of the Oakland Nonprofit Resource Center and serves on the Board of Directors of the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center. Mr. Jelks contributes to Felton Institute’s role as a vital change agent and national leader in community-focused work.

Mr. Jelks received his Bachelor’s degree in History and Music from Cal State University, East Bay and his Master’s degree in Public Administration from Cal State University, East Bay.
