Radical generosity is the essential concept centered in GivingTuesday, a global movement that embodies the idea that “the suffering of others should be as intolerable to us as our own suffering.” This global movement brings together individuals, communities, and leaders who give back and create impactful change through various acts of generosity; whether that’s volunteering, organizing food drives to feed the food insecure, planting trees to beautify public spaces, or donating money to local organizations, among other ways of giving. “GivingTuesday’s mission is about instilling generosity as a key component of how we build healthy communities and a resilient civil society,” explained GivingTuesday’s Chief Data Officer, Woodrow Rosenbaum.

Practicing radical generosity creates positive outcomes and builds flourishing communities. No one understands its impact more than GivingTuesday’s Chief Data Officer Woodrow Rosenbaum who tracks data on GivingTuesday teams in 105 countries with thousands of people around the world building the radical generosity movement. “We have a team of data scientists and data engineers,” he explained. “We have community teams that support the organizations in our network to come together and learn from one another and share best practices and how to increase generosity, as well as give more agency to givers all the time.”

The ways in which people can give are limitless. “People can give literally in any way that they can imagine,” Rosenbaum said. “What we observe every year is that people give money, they give things, they give their time, they give advocacy for causes that they’re interested in supporting. They give directly to individuals; they give to nonprofits.” He added, “We also know that there’s a lot of giving directly to local community and smaller organizations.” This is especially true for GivingTuesday’s annual event. Taking place on December 3rd this year, GivingTuesday provides toolkits, strategies and guidance on how to make it a success. “You get to be part of this big global celebration and experience,” Rosenbaum said, “and a lot of the action is right at home, right where you are with organizations close to your heart.”
