Foster Grandparent Program (FGP)

The AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is a child-centric program that provides an opportunity for children to connect with older adults on a daily basis. AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers use their life experiences to help the children learn new skills and gain the confidence needed to succeed.

The AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program offers a multigenerational avenue for developing meaningful relationships, deep connections and shared experiences that are long-lasting. We place AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers into the San Francisco Foster Grandparent Program operated by Felton Institute. We are an AmeriCorps Seniors grantee and receive funds through their Foster Grandparent Program (SCP). AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers are older adults, aged 55 and older, who offer support and wisdom to children in the San Francisco Bay Area. They are matched within childcare and school settings to help children with literacy and other developmental activities.

AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers are tutors, mentors and friends who enrich young lives by sharing knowledge and experience through one-on-one classroom activities, group activities, reading support, creative play, field trips and much more. They have a passion for helping children and youth to succeed. AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers bring their unique talents, kindness, focus and consistency to the children they support, who often do not have an older adult with whom to connect.

AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers receive a small, TAX-FREE hourly stipend (that will not affect governmental benefits) and transportation reimbursement (dependent on budget) for their contributions.

AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in the Foster Grandparent Program are matched within childcare and school settings to help children with literacy and other developmental activities. They serve between 10-30 hours a week in preschools, elementary schools, and various community childcare settings.

To become an AmeriCorps Senior volunteer, applicants must be:

  • Aged 55 or older
  • Maximum income of:
    • Single: $2,430/month
      or $29,160/year
    • Married: $3,287/month
      or $39,440/year

Small hourly tax-free federal stipends are provided. No fees are charged to participants or volunteers.
